At Pilkington Communications, we are proud to support and champion local changemakers – and this month, we are especially proud to recognise the extraordinary contribution of Toby Birch, founder of Community Spaces Northampton (CSN), who has stepped down as Chair after more than a decade of inspiring leadership.
Following the charity’s AGM this April, our Director, Jessica Pilkington, was appointed as the new Chair of CSN. A passionate advocate for community-led change and sustainability, Jessica brings her extensive experience in communications, charity governance, and stakeholder engagement to this important role.
Toby, who remains a trustee, founded CSN in 2010, transforming a bold idea into a pioneering movement that has protected and revitalised much-loved community spaces across Northampton. From negotiating the original transfer of seven community centres from the borough council to now overseeing ten sites – including the recently saved Bellinge Community House and Semilong Community Centre – Toby’s legacy is one of innovation, impact, and unwavering commitment to community.
Toby Birch said: “Community spaces are the beating hearts of our neighbourhoods. They are places where people connect, belong, and feel supported. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved at Community Spaces Northampton – and with Jessica stepping into the Chair role, I know the charity is in safe and inspiring hands. With her leadership and our committed team of staff and trustees, CSN will continue to grow and thrive.”
Toby’s leadership has also had national influence. CSN was the first group in the country to manage multiple community centres independently, and he has since guided other communities through similar transitions – sharing knowledge, delivering training, and inspiring action far beyond Northamptonshire.

Jessica said: “It’s a real honour to build on the foundations Toby has laid. Our community centres are more than buildings – they’re safe, welcoming spaces that bring people together, offer support, and create real opportunities for local people. I look forward to working with our talented team of trustees and staff to strengthen partnerships, co-create services with residents, and ensure a sustainable future for CSN.”
At Pilkington Communications, we remain deeply committed to using our skills, creativity and platforms to amplify the work of organisations like CSN – and we’re delighted that Jessica’s leadership role will help shape the next chapter of this vital charity.
